From Dream to Reality: Bringing a Piece of Mexico to Calgary

Every journey begins with a dream.

When we first envisioned opening our coffee shop, our goal was clear: to capture the essence of a magical town in Mexico and recreate that warm, inviting atmosphere right here in Calgary. We wanted to offer more than just coffee—we aimed to provide a space that felt like home, infused with the rich culture and flavors of Mexico.

The Search for the Perfect Spot

Finding the right location was no easy feat. Calgary boasts numerous heritage cafes occupying prime spots, making our search challenging. However, we believed we had something unique to offer—a fresh perspective and a deep-rooted passion for Mexican coffee culture. Our perseverance paid off when West Village Towers gave us the opportunity to bring our vision to life.

Building from the Ground Up

We started with a modest, gray space—a blank canvas brimming with potential. Without hiring a general contractor, we took on the responsibility of overseeing every aspect of the build. From measuring the space and designing the layout to coordinating HVAC, drywall, electrical, and plumbing work, we collaborated with local Calgary companies to bring our dream to fruition. As a startup with limited resources, this hands-on approach allowed us to stay true to our vision while supporting local businesses.

Navigating Challenges and Embracing Community

With just three months to complete the build, we faced countless sleepless nights, poring over documentation to ensure compliance with all City of Calgary regulations. Despite the challenges, our determination never wavered. We were driven by our desire to share the rich tapestry of Mexican coffee culture with our community and to create new job opportunities in the process.

Crafting Authenticity: Every Detail Matters

From selecting the perfect flooring to importing hand-painted tiles, vibrant decorations, and artisanal mugs, every element at Frida’s Coffee Home was chosen with intention. Our goal was to create a space that resonates with the warmth and charm of a traditional Mexican café—a place that feels like home.

We envisioned a haven for everyone: a cozy spot to relax, a welcoming environment for dates, a quiet corner for studying, or simply a cheerful place to grab your favorite coffee.

Pouring Our Hearts into Every Cup

At Frida’s, our passion goes beyond serving exceptional coffee. We pour our hearts into every aspect of the café—from the ambiance to the beverages. Our menu features traditional Mexican specialties like Café de Olla and Atole, alongside beloved pastries such as conchas and tres leches cake. Each item tells a story of family recipes and long-standing traditions.

We believe in creating a space where everyone feels welcome and valued. Our commitment to authenticity and quality drives us to continuously share the rich tapestry of Mexican coffee culture with our community.
